Finish Line

Kalma lang at ipaglaban mo ang Edukasyon" - Keep calm and fight for education. Isn't it ironic why many people nowadays, especially here in our country, keep on dreaming that they'll end up in reaching their goals even if many of our countrymen are facing poverty, lack of attention by our own government and many negative problems that could make a barrier when trying to reach their desires. We, Filipinos, are optimistic of our Education, we smile when we know life is too hard to face, we always seek happiness even if we are full of problems, we struggle through pains and sorrows, and still we are here standing up fighting for education to alleviate ourselves from poverty and discrimination. Yes, fight, and never give up, take one step at a time, keep calm, be patient and soon you'll someday reach your dream.

Maybe you’re wondering what is the connection of this introduction to "EDUBLOGGING", right? when I saw my professor post about edublogging, the first thing and definition that came to my mind was, "Education through blogging".

Through the course of my education life, starting from being a 3 year old boy in a day care center, and now at a College University I've learned soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much things from words to numbers, from reading to writing, education, indeed taught me a lot of unforgettable things in my life. But the very important thing that I really should not forget are my values. My parents and also my professors instilled in us these values, the persons they want us to be, a role model and a good example for our future generation.

So my purpose here is to learn more from you and hoping that you'll also learn something from my reflections about how education taught me to become a better person.

I'm at my 4th year now in College, taking up Bachelor of Science in Medical technology. Though I couldn't make up next semester for our internship, I'm confident that I'll be graduating this course and hoping to be a professional someday. I don't easily lose hope, even if one day one of my subjects asks me to take some removal exam, I'll accept it wholeheartedly and strive more to reach my goal instead of losing hope.

And that's it, I know myself well and I know through hardships and being a patient man, someday I'll reach that finish line, a line after passing it will make myself a better man, a better son, student, and a model for Filipinos who are lost and has given up their education.

Toxicology: Eat well, Stay well, All is Well

OK so this is my second post for this year and I hope all of you read my last post. Anyway, maybe you're wondering why my topic today is entitled "Toxicology: All is Well" it is like you're thinking right now that my idea of relating toxicology to the words all is well is beyond to the point, it doesn't make sense right? so my advice, finish reading my blog and soon you'll realize what I really meant when I entitled it, Toxicology: All is well.

This is not the first time I heard and studied about toxicology, Last semester I remembered that on our pharmacology subject my professor defined what toxicology is. Being a student of Medical technology not only myself but all other Med tech students should know the Universal precautions which is, "Treat all specimens as potentially infectious" Why? because when we are exposed to some chemicals in a laboratory or to any other places there might be a possible effects without us knowing it might damage our system.

As I am reading the blog of my professor, Mrs. Virginia Gaces she mentioned that "All reagents, chemicals are to be considered as toxins and treated as such, no matter what their classification is. - 2009" This made me realize that this is the first thing to consider before exposing to some chemicals and telling yourself with confidence while tapping your chest, "all is well". Always wear your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before exposing and preparing yourself to this chemicals. Having an idea what Toxicology is without really defining it's meaning?

As I mentioned awhile ago, there might be a possible effect that toxins may harm our body thus, Toxicology is the study of detrimental effects of reagents, specimens or generally chemicals on us and other living organisms. It is also the investigation of treatments, symptoms related to poisoning and detection why people are suffering from toxic chemicals.

While reading my previous lectures related to my topic there are these types of toxicity screenings that how toxics affects us humans, the following are:

  • Acute toxicity - It is the harmful effect of chemicals that may manifest in our body, for seconds, minutes or even days.
    • "No - effect dose - It is the largest dose at which a toxic is not seen
    • Minimum lethal dose - from the name itself minimal amount of drug that can a kill a living organism
    • LD50 "Ledian dose, 50%" - it is the amount of dose that can kill half of the test population

  • Subacute/ chronic toxicity - It is the prolonged or repeatedly exposure to the toxics or chemicals
    • Mutagenecity - it is the possible ability to induce genetic alteration or mutation
    • Carcinogenecity - detection of possible ability to induce abnormal clonal uncontrolled proliferation in short it may induced cancer cells
    • Teratogenecity - toxics that may affect the developing fetus

As you can see toxics or poisons are very harmful to our body because exposure to this chemicals may cause irritant effects on the skin it may even cause asthma, asbestosis or worst it may even cause us cancer. This blog is not meant to scare you towards chemicals, toxics, poisons my intention is to help you understand and help yourselves to always be conscious of this and don't take them for granted that it may cause dangerous effects in your health.

So, for my conclusion I hope you've all learned what may be the cause and effect of this toxins to our body. Be smart, stay sharp towards this chemicals and, always EAT WELL, STAY WELL and everything will all just be fine at the end of the day, ALL is WELL!

Endocrinology: Past, Present and Future

Have you ever wondered why when we were kids we really don't care about our looks, how we wear clothes and all we do is play, play, play until we turn in sleeping like we haven't slept for days? Yes, yes I did all this child's play when I was at my younger years (If you didn't experienced this, you're missing half of your childhood).

In just a blink of an eye, 10 or 15 years after I'm all grown up, I can still do those things when I was child but it'll feel awkward in-front of grown ups like me. So why am I telling you all of these childhood memories, grown up stuffs, blah.. blah.. blah.. blah.. well it's because I want you  to ask yourself, why is there a big difference between you and your appearance when you are still a child. Simple my friend, It's all because of how our hormones functions and aids in regulating activities in our body.

I would like to discuss furthermore how hormones are very important chemical substance that affects our growth, metabolism, emotions and physiological activities but first how is hormone released? The term Endocrinology is a branch of science and medicine, and studies how hormones plays important role in our body.

Our endocrine system is a registry of glands that releases hormones that modulate our body's physiological activities, puberty and sexual development. The hormones are discharged into the bloodstream and carried to organs and tissues throughout our body. The endocrine system works with the nervous system to help our body develop properly.

There are three groups of hormones:

  • Steroid hormones - Secreted by our adrenal glands and gonads (testis and ovary)
  • Amino acid derivatives - Secreted by our pituitary gland like epinephrine, nor-epinephrine
  • Peptide hormones - Secreted by our anterior (prolactin) and posterior (antidiuretic hormone/vasopressin) pituitary glands proteins, like insulin
So maybe now you're having an idea what really is Endocrinology or simply our hormones do to our body. Interesting right? Keep reading if you want to learn more. OK, so here is another experience I would like to share to all of you my dear readers. Lately I've been asking myself why does my younger brother is taller than me though I'm 2 years older than him. For my part as his "kuya", It is kinda awkward when I'm with him then friends of him asks, is he your younger brother? simply my reaction and response to them would be like, uhmmm, Isn't obvious that I look older than him?

So yeah, Even though you're older than someone and looks younger than him or her, don't blame yourself this is again because of how our Hormones react to our system. In our case with my brother this is because of his Growth Hormones.

Growth Hormones are part of the Amino Acid derivatives mentioned above which is part of the three groups of hormones. These naturally occurring hormones are secreted by our Pituitary gland found inferiorly to our hypothalamus and helps in regulating the growth of our bones and muscles in our body. It is also plays an important role in how the body uses food for our everyday fuel. This explains why such people who are younger in age looks older by their built and height.
